Mrs BEETON comes to Chelmarsh

Date: September 2, 2018

Time: 5.00pm, with afternoon tea

Chelmarsh Parish Hall booked talented Alison Neil to perform her acclaimed piece ‘Mrs Beeton, My Sister’, for December 2017, but it had to be cancelled due to heavy snow. It was re-arranged for March 2018, and again had to be cancelled due to snow! It is now booked for 2nd September 2018. Surely it cannot snow again?
The show is well worth waiting for. Alison tells of the extraordinary life of Isabella Beeton, as seen through the eyes of her sister Bessie. They were the eldest in a family of 21 children, brought up in the Grand Stand at Epsom Race Course.
Quiet and obedient, Isabella fell for a charming publisher, Sam Beeton, and joined his rackety life in journalism. Aged only 21, she started writing the works that became her famous cookery book. She was dead of fever by the age of 28, but the fame of her book lives on, often outselling all books other than The Bible, and is still in print. Her name has become a byword for domestic management, and she was perhaps the first ‘Domestic Goddess’?
Where did she get her ideas from? Her family disapproved – were they right?
